Archival Presence—
Writing Women’s Design History
In this project, I used the Harvard archives to write four histories about women in design to call attention to their lives and work. The women include architect Eleanor Raymond, the designer, publisher, and illustrator Pamela Colman Smith; the writer and urban designer Jane Fiske Thompson; architect, Harvard graduate, and women’s rights advocate Franziska Hosken. The histories generated span literary genres, including journalistic essays, a one-act play, and historical fiction. In doing so, I hoped to convey stories about women that enrich the public’s understanding of design history and women's role within the profession.
