Proposed Exhibition / Andrea Zittel
at ICA Boston

Andrea Zittel is an American contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary work blurs the boundaries between art and architecture, design, and domestic life. The ICA Watershed exhibition site in Boston, MA, uniquely blends architectural elements, historical narratives, and community involvement. This aligns strongly with Andrea Zittel’s efforts. The show’s title, “intimate universe,” comes from a theory Zittel mentioned in her film Sufficient Self: “[The idea of the intimate universe] is that rather than trying to reach a global audience, my artwork would have a more potent effect by responding to the context of a small familiar community.” This “familiar community,” within the exhibition are spaces of personal escape and collective engagement within and beyond the site of the ICA Watershed. Both ICA spaces are uniquely positioned to engage with Boston’s waterfront in meaningful, site-specific ways, overlooking a harbor that is both a geographical separation and a site of congregation.
