I am a designer and researcher who explores writing as a design method, women’s history in design, and collaborative practice. In my career, I have sought lenses that make the strange familiar and the familiar strange, pursuing interests in food systems, brain injuries, and sustainable gardening.

I enjoy a multitude of actions and undertakings, from working with architects as a graphic designer to running a networked design lab in Portland, Maine, and teaching as faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University, Northeastern University, and Maine College of Art and Design. My goals as a design educator were one of provocation and expansion. In the classroom, I allowed students to build the skills necessary to insert themselves into unfamiliar territories, act as tools for others to accomplish their goals, and engage in collaborative relationships where all involved are learning from each other to produce responsive work. In this work, I developed a new body of design knowledge, presenting on teaching and design at conferences held by the Cumulus Association, Design Research Society, College Arts Association, Tasmeem Doha, and in publications such as AIGA Dialectic Journal.

I practice in a rich ecology of ideas, seeking to understand design practice, both the theory and application, and its societal effects. This work includes researching those marginalized in design history, ultimately expanding understanding of the practice. In that work, I am exploring what it means to write for a broad audience and what they will find worth their attention and time.

My work and interests have been informed by my education in Graphic Design from Rochester Institute of Technology, my master's degree in Experience Design from North Carolina State University, and most recently, a Master's in Design Studies from Harvard Graduate School of Design.
